Pergolas in Mesquite
A pergola defines an outdoor space and takes the edge off the sun without closing it in or darkening the rooms behind it. Built in cedar, pressure-treated pine or aluminium, freestanding or attached.

What a Pergola Actually Does
It is worth being clear about this before spending money, because pergolas are the outdoor structure most often bought with the wrong expectation.
A traditional pergola with evenly spaced slats gives partial, moving shade. It takes the harshness out of the light, it makes a space feel like a room, and it lets air through — which in Texas matters more than people expect, because a solid roof over a still patio traps heat. It will not keep you dry and it will not give you full shade at midday.
How much shade you get is a design decision, not a fixed property. Slat spacing, slat depth and — crucially — orientation all change the result. Slats running north-south versus east-west produce noticeably different shade at different times of day. A pergola designed for afternoon shade on a west-facing patio should not be built the same way as one meant to soften midday light.
If what you actually want is to sit outside at three in the afternoon in July, completely out of the sun and dry when it rains, you want a patio cover, not a pergola. We would rather tell you that now than build you something that does not do what you were hoping.

Louvered Pergolas
A louvered pergola has adjustable slats that rotate, usually by hand crank or motor. Closed, it sheds rain and gives full shade. Open, it behaves like a traditional pergola and lets light and air through.
It is genuinely the best of both, and it costs accordingly — significantly more than a fixed structure of the same size. Most louvered systems are aluminium, which means no staining, no rot and no insects, and a look that reads modern rather than traditional.
For a North Texas patio the argument for louvered is strong precisely because the year has such different seasons of use. Closed through the worst of the summer and through storms, open in spring and autumn when the sun is welcome. Whether that flexibility justifies the price is a real question, and the answer depends on how much you will actually use the space.

Materials and Structure
Cedar is the traditional choice and the best-looking. It is naturally resistant to rot and insects, it moves less than pine, and it takes stain well. It needs finishing to hold its colour and it costs more than treated pine.
Pressure-treated pine is the budget option and perfectly serviceable if it is kept sealed. Left bare in this climate it greys and checks. It is also heavier and less stable than cedar, which matters on longer spans.
Aluminium removes maintenance entirely and is what most louvered systems are built from. It will not rot, warp or feed termites, and it spans further with slimmer posts. It looks like what it is, which suits some houses and not others.
Whatever the material, a pergola is still a structure that catches wind. The posts need proper footings — the same expansive clay that moves deck footings across Dallas County moves pergola posts, and a pergola is tall enough that a lean shows immediately. An undersized footing on a structure with that much surface area is not just a cosmetic risk.
How we work
Step by step
- 01
We look at the space and how the sun moves across it
- 02
Design sized and oriented for actual shade, not just looks
- 03
Written quote by material and span
- 04
HOA and permits checked before the build
- 05
Build, clean up, and walk it with you
What it costs
Priced by size, material and roof type. A fixed cedar pergola and a motorised louvered aluminium one are very different budgets for a similar-looking footprint.
Questions
Pergolas — asked and answered
Does a pergola provide enough shade in Texas?
Partial shade, and how much depends on slat spacing and orientation. It makes a space considerably more comfortable and it lets air move, which matters here. It does not give full midday shade and it will not keep you dry. If that is what you need, a solid patio cover is the honest answer.
Are louvered pergolas worth the extra cost?
If you will use the space across the whole year, they make a strong case: closed for summer sun and storms, open in spring and autumn. They cost significantly more than a fixed pergola of the same size. The question is genuinely how much you will use it, and only you can answer that.
Can a pergola be built over my existing deck or patio?
Usually yes. The question is the footings — the posts need to carry into proper foundations, which sometimes means working through or around an existing slab or deck structure. It is straightforward if it is planned; it is more work if the deck was built without it in mind.
Cedar or aluminium?
Cedar looks better on a traditional house and needs finishing to stay that way. Aluminium needs nothing, spans further with slimmer posts, and looks modern. If you want a louvered roof the answer is usually aluminium anyway, since that is what most systems are built from.
Do I need a permit for a pergola?
It depends on the size, the height and whether it attaches to the house — and on current City of Mesquite requirements, which we confirm for your specific project. HOA approval is frequently required regardless of whether the city needs a permit, because a pergola is visible from outside.
